New Projects

This year we have constructed a new 30 foot long water feature starting by the Hornbeam gazebo and running down over several cascades into a new pool by the Rustic trellis.

We have also, at last, completed a very special project; the construction of two full size labyrinths, one of grass and the other of stone. Here we invite you to contemplate and walk the intricate and ancient design.

Feel the lure of the Labyrinth

Come visit and experience the lure of the labyrinths for yourself. Designed by Chris Park of Acorn Education they are based on ancient paths created to lead you to a central point from which you return along the same route - and exit changed in some positive manner...

The Grass Labyrinth designed by www.acorneducation.com The ancient Labyrinth symbol occurs around the world in different cultures at different times and in places as diverse as Peru, Arizona, Iceland, Crete, Egypt, India and Sumatra. This symbol has been traced back over 4000 years and its origins are still unknown and mysterious. The most well known is in the legend of the Cretan Labyrinth where Theseus slays the Minotaur to free Greece from Cretan rule.

The Medieval Christian Church recognized the power and symbolism of the Labyrinth as an allegory for a spiritual journey and the path of life. They brought the labyrinths inside as the floors of the great Gothic Cathedrals and so preserved them for us to walk, centuries later.

The Labyrinth is a unicursal (single path) that leads you to a central point from which you return along the same route to exit. There is only one way to go, you are always on the right path and you cannot make mistakes. You exit as you came, yet on departing you may be subtly changed and different.

A view of both labyrinths
Can we tempt you to walk the Whitlenge Labyrinths, one grass, one stone?

Our grass Labyrinth is constructed with a red gra pathway between with mounded embankments of dwarf grasses.

Our stone Labyrinth is constructed using red gra pathways but with smooth sea-washed Welsh stones to walk between.

So, feel the lure of the Labyrinth, enter slowly and calmly. What will you find at its centre? The Minotaur or the peace you are seeking?

A blessing on all that walk its path.

The gardens and nurseries are open 9am to 5pm every day (Sundays 10am - 5pm)
